Its nice to be appreciated...
NELSONS WAKE - Ebb and Flow:
"...evocative songs... Gently imaginative arrangements, excellent solo and harmony singing, accomplished musicianship... A thoroughly charming release" (fRoots)
"The veritable song-writing talent of Barry Wake... Siobhan's utterly charming vocals... her voice at times exhibiting echoes of Maddy Prior... The instrumental accompaniment of Chris Nelson is always sympathetic to the material and a joy to listen to." (Mike Wilson, folking.com).
"The album is chock-full of true craftsmanship in the writing and partnered by responsive and abundantly sensitive musicianship... Just under half of the songs are sung by Siobhan, beautifully and expressively and with exemplary diction... ...a most attractive collection of classy and satisfying songs that richly deserve to be heard (and sung) more widely." (David Kidman, NetRhythms).
"The album is ringing with melodies, gentle guitars and accordion, fiddle and vocals sung in harmony. Coming from Southampton, stories of the city and our life on the sea has inspired Barry's songs, a number of which were sung by Chris and Siobhan on their previous albums (which continue to be available at the service). He writes all the songs here which is a testament to his superior talent. Combining a genuine appreciation of the folk tradition and an ability to portray it in highly enjoyable modern songs is a precious gift. In bringing together Barry with Chris and Siobhan it is the listener who benefits with a most welcome album that embodies what we're trying to support through the service”. (Woven Wheat Whispers)
"Just got back from a weekend at Maddy Prior's Stones Barn workshop. Maddy told us again and quite unprompted how much she enjoyed the Nelsons Wake CD. Ain't that nice! We did Mazey days this afternoon - it was a request from Abbie Lathe and it went down a storm. All the Stones Barn lot were singing away with gusto and saying what a great song it was". (Chris & Siobhan Nelson - two thirds of Nelson Wake)
All the way from Brazil...
WHITE STAR LINE UP - LOOK OUT! Southampton's Titanic story in song:
"I had the chance to visit Southampton on the 14th of April 2012 to participate in the activities of the Titanic Centenary. One of them was the Grave Walks (on the Old Cemetery), where i also had the opportunity to buy your CD. I only had the chance to listen to it today, already in Brazil. And let me tell you, it was one of the best purchases of my life. Being a Titanic enthusiast, i'm always searching for material about the disaster, but your songs are of a different league. With them, I could feel the fears, the dreams, the depth of the characters of each song. I was so immersed in the story, and so worried about them, that I forgot I was listening to a CD! Your work is moving, entertaining and deeply enlightening". (Bruno Piola)
And here's a blast from the distant past...
BARRY WAKE - Time Alone Will Tell:
."...here is a sensitive musician, a writer who can take a snippet of conversation and turn it into a good song, the magician who can grow something out of a tiny acorn..... an excellent controlled voice, he knows how to phrase a line, how to make it scan, so it always sounds relaxed, a born storyteller." (John Paddy Browne Folk on Tap issue 61 1994)
